Google Chrome is appending 'index.php' to the end of my URL

When I hit enter on a complete URL in the Google Chrome address bar, it's appending 'index.php' on the end of a particular URL that I maintain. This probably has something to do with the fact that the site used to have index.php as its document root, however it does no longer so this is a 404.
I've deleted the bookmark that pointed to the index.php version of the URL. Other browsers on my system are not showing this behaviour. Incognito mode in Chrome is however. Also, holding control down when I hit enter prevents this from happening.
I want to be able to rule out that this is a server side behaviour, and confirm that this is specific to Chrome (and hopefully even fix it).
